INBOUND: Harlem Pace Wing

Harlem’s new all-rounder wing comes with some bold claims as well as lots of innovative tech. We tapped up the team for more info…

Hey team. You’re calling the Pace the perfect all-rounder wing. Tell us why it ticks all the boxes for riders…

The Pace is an ultra-light, versatile, and easy to ride wing, suitable for every riding style. Due to its sharp profile, the Pace offers exceptional upwind performance. At the same time, the extreme light construction of the wing enhances its downwind capabilities, making riding the perfect waves possible even in the lightest breeze. The Pace delivers smooth and effortless maneuvers, and long lofty jumps, making it a perfect choice for every rider, regardless if you are cruising around Lake Garda, or catching waves in Mauritius.

The Pace features the “PROWELD” tech on the leading edge, rather than traditional stitching. What are the pluses, on using this?

The PROWELD technology has been developed after years of research and testing by Ralf Groesel. It allows for welding panels together, instead of stitching them. This provides a significant weight reduction to the leading edge, while simultaneously increasing the bonding strength of the two Dacron panels put together. Thus, enhancing the overall strength of the airframe, and achieving high performance results with a traditional material at a lower price level, compared to using more expensive materials.

The Pace is marketed as the “first sustainable wing”. Talk to us about the credentials there.

The Pace is indeed the first sustainable wing, and in general the first wing made in Europe. Produced at the fully solar-powered, innovative Brainchild Production facility in Europe, the Pace is made with locally sourced and, where possible, recycled raw materials. This includes canopy from France, 100% recycled webbing from Germany, and 100% recycled yarns from Austria.

The Pace also utilizes a digital eco printing technique, an approach that saves up to four times more water and energy compared to traditional printing methods, along with opening unlimited design and customization opportunities.

How did you manage to make such a clean canopy shape out of only two panels per side – what witchcraft is this?!

The witchcraft goes even further as the canopy of the Pace consists of only 2 panels in total. It took a lot of testing to achieve the perfect aerodynamic shape, and the result is really game changing. Add to this the digital printing technology, and the wing sets new standards in the industry.

The dual panel canopy with the single seam construction prevents production errors and ensures perfect tension, while also avoiding stretching issues. Combined with durable STW 70 material, this enhances the wing's shape retention and overall durability.

Is there any other fresh tech infused into the Pace?

The Harlem Pace features no floating strut, creating true aerodynamic perfection with improved flying performance, and also allowing for better window visibility and a safer ride.

Who’s been lead designer on the Pace, and what experience do they bring to this product?

Harlem’s founder, Alex Morgenstern, stands behind the design. We have been designing wings since 2018 when the Superfly model was introduced to the market. And the Pace is our next generation wing.

Finally, talk to us about the Brainchild facility, and what benefits there are from having your wings made there?

Together with Brainchild Production we have a common goal – to create the best high-performance gear at the most competitive price, while also minimizing our impact on the environment. Producing in the state-of-the-art facility in Europe has not only enabled us to create high quality, durable, high performance, sustainably made products, but to reinvent our supply and distribution processes, allowing us to significantly reduce our CO2 footprint, and make a real change.

State of Play: Surf foiling and the Connection with Nature

Any “new” form of wave riding that shows up in the line-up is bound to raise a few eyebrows – and, I’d argue more often than not, meet a fair bit of skepticism or even outright disdain from whoever the mainstream crowd happens to be out there. On occasion that reaction might be justified. More often though, it’s not. But as Noé Cantaloube argues in this piece, when it comes to surf foiling, it’s worth looking a little deeper – and maybe even giving it a go – before jumping to conclusions.

Flight Path: Phil Lewis

Artist Phil Lewis’s journey to the foil was much like many others – via other board/wind sports, earning his stripes on lakes in California and Colorado. But it was a trip to Nicaragua in 2023 that cemented Phil’s love affair with foiling… which has also now found its way into his art in quite interesting ways.
