MERCURY RISING

More often known for her adventures within the Arctic Circle, Kari Schibevaag relishes her time spent wingfoiling in warmer climes. But the allure of her cold comforts is never too far away…

Anticipation bubbled as we boarded our flight from Oslo, exchanging laughter and animated chatter about the impending sailboat adventure in Egypt. The promise of warmth enveloped us as we transitioned from a chilly -20°C in Oslo to a balmy +25°C upon landing. The allure of the Egyptian sun beckoned, casting a golden hue over our eager spirits.

Yet, our journey took an unexpected twist as the baggage carousel played a cruel trick, with our checked bags nowhere in sight. After a prolonged wait, a resolution emerged – the elusive bags would rendezvous with us at the boat in Hamata Port. A four-hour taxi ride later, we found ourselves en route to our dream destination…

The first day aboard and turquoise waters beckoned as we sailed to an enchanting island just beyond Hamata Port. The journey itself was mesmerizing, with an endless horizon stretching out beneath the radiant Egyptian sun, which thawed our cold bodies and kept us smiling. The crystal-clear waters proved to be a snorkeler's haven, revealing an underwater world akin to an aquarium, vibrant and teeming with marine life.

The next morning, we woke to a sunrise at 5:55 am. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafted through the air as the crew served us delightful pastries. What a life we were living. With the anticipation of our bags arriving on the boat later in the day, we decided to take it easy. Life at sea is beautiful, and given that life was so hectic prior to our arrival, it was the perfect moment to relax and unwind before the action would begin.

As we approached a lagoon, where dolphins swam around the boat, our bags finally arrived with our equipment. Eager to immerse ourselves before it was time to pump up, we plunged into the crystal-clear waters for an enchanting swim with the dolphins and we connected with these magnificent creatures. Emerging from the sea, hungry and content, we found the chef had prepared a delicious meal. Seated on the deck, we enjoyed our lunch while observing the playful dolphins in the distance.

Feeling a surge of excitement after lunch, it was time to embark on the first wingfoil session. The wind was perfect. As I maneuvered around the boat, the dolphins circled me, enhancing the already magical experience. Wingfoiling proved to be the ideal water sport for a sailboat setting, with an effortless launching into dreamlike sessions. And no 5mm gloves required!

The following days aboard the boat unfolded as a continuous rhythm of joy, adventure, and relaxation. Our routine seamlessly blended the enchanting encounters with dolphins, exhilarating wingfoil sessions, and indulgent feasts. Each morning greeted us with the promise of new marine wonders. The dolphins became our companions on this seafaring journey. As the boat sailed through the open waters, we eagerly anticipated the next encounter with them. Wingfoiling became my daily ritual – the wind was on my side on this trip and I got so many good sessions through morning, midday, and into the night.

Evenings on the boat were all about good food and great company. The chef continued to delight with culinary creations that mirrored the richness of the situation and the company around us. As we gathered on the deck under the canvas of stars, the sounds of laughter and contentment echoed over the gentle lapping of the waves. The simplicity of life on the boat, immersed in nature's wonder, brought a sense of tranquillity. Every sunset painted the sky with hues of pink and gold, casting a serene glow over our floating haven. We spent time on the boat, but we also had the occasional bonfire on sandy islands we passed by.

As our magical journey drifted towards its end, we acknowledged that the memories we’d created during those days on the Red Sea will forever hold a special place in our hearts. However, amidst the beautiful blue sea and the baking Egyptian sun, there lingered a longing for the crisp embrace of snow and winter. It might seem peculiar to some, but for me, it's the contrasts that make life beautiful. The transition from the warmth of the sea to the chill of winter carries its own unique charm.

Reflecting on the journey, I felt a sense of gratitude and happiness for having experienced such a unique adventure. The memories of sailing under the sun, swimming with dolphins, and feeling the warm winds on my face will be cherished forever. What a life we have, and how fortunate I am to have been a part of this voyage and, although the trip has come to an end, the echoes of laughter, the taste of exquisite meals, and the sound of the wind in the sails will stay with me.
