New Zealand-based company, PPC Foiling, emerges from a region well known for innovation in water sports technology. Gaining recognition for its premium wings and boards in recent years, PPC continues to push performance limits in 2024 with the release of its M1 series of wind wings.
The M1 range brings together the latest advances in composite fabrics to create a lightweight yet ultra-stiff airframe. Available in sizes from 3 to 7m, the lineup includes the M1-L (entry-level), M1 (standard), and M1-X (high end). The various models differ primarily in cost, based on how extensively they incorporate PPC’s expertly interweaved “Dyneema” composite fiber in their construction.
Dyneema, prized for its superior strength-to-weight ratio, tear resistance, and waterproof properties, is 15 times stronger than steel by weight. Leveraging the benefits of this aerospace-grade material, PPC has developed its lightest wings to date, and has also managed to reduce the leading edge diameter across all models by 20%. At the recommended 9psi operating pressure, the frame and canopy become incredibly rigid, delivering race-sail-like performance for next level efficiency, instant load transfer, speed, and control.
In gusty 10-20 knot winds, we tested the 5m M1-L at our local reef break. Immediately, the wing impressed with its instant power and speed, and naturally sharp upwind angles. The carbon fiber “ergo-boom” handles felt smooth and well situated, ensuring seamless transitions and power delivery on tap.
Well-positioned windows provide excellent visibility, and trailing edge support spars completely eliminate canopy flutter. Depowering the wing for wave riding, it was a silky smooth switch to the front handle. The wing towed behind effortlessly, superbly stable with the 5m feeling more like a 4m thanks to its compact and lightweight design.
The M1-L balances accessibility and performance, making it ideal for new riders or those on a budget. While it shares core design elements with the premium models, it lowers costs by limiting Dyneema reinforcement to the leading edge, where rigidity is crucial. Despite this, the M1-L is still a superior product, its reinforced frame holding shape easily even under strong gusts, its stiffness also helping to minimize the effort required to pump or redirect it on the fly.
The package includes all essentials: a spacious storage bag, spare parts, and a pump adapter for the dual-valve system. The build quality shines through every detail, with obvious premium materials and flawless seam and stitch work. The twist-and-lock valves ensure controlled deflation, eliminating those loud uncontrolled air releases during packdown that tend to shock bystanders.
The M1-L delivers exceptional performance and showcases the latest in wing design innovation. While it’s an excellent choice on its own, riders with deeper pockets might like the M1 or M1-X models which offer even more enhanced agility and response through their lighter, Dyneema-focused premium builds.
