Roberto Ricci Designs has a long history of innovation in water sports, with its roots in windsurfing and kitesurfing. This year, RRD has drawn attention with its stunning new wing foil equipment, including the Beluga LTD board. This new version showcases a mix of cutting-edge construction techniques, like the use of Innegra Carbon for enhanced stiffness and impact resistance, and ergonomic designs optimized for various water conditions. The deck features a reimagined progressive full concave in the mid and front sections, positioning your front foot closer to the front wing for superior control. The pronounced kicker is enhanced with a cutout/stepped tail, creating a straighter rocker for earlier take-offs, while maintaining full volume support on the rear foot during pumping.
The 35, 45, 55, and 65 sizes have completely flat bottoms for excellent stability and user-friendly handling. In contrast, the 75, 80, 85, 92, 105, 125, and 145 sizes incorporate a stepped tail design, optimizing smoother and earlier take-offs, making them perfect for riders looking to enjoy lighter conditions.
For this test I was riding the 55L which is around 4’6, paired with a 950 foil and in various conditions from 15knots on a 5m wing to 30/35 with a 3m. For the record, I’m 70kg and I usually ride boards around 45 to 55L.
On the beach, the overall look is premium – you can’t miss the sleek carbon finish on the bottom of the board. It’s not just about the looks though, it makes the board feel stiff and solid underfoot. On the water, this board is short, compact, super easy to move around and great for sharp turns too. I felt totally in control, especially when I was carving, adjusting mid-ride, or changing feet for tacks or jibes. You’ll just need to adapt to the width of the board, it can create a bit of wobble if you’re a bit too much in the center, but it takes one tack to adjust and find the right balance.
Take offs were smooth and early as the shape and design helps you get up on the foil really quickly. Even with lighter winds, I was able to get going without much hassle, which is always a win, especially when you need to get back up in between waves. I felt that this board was the perfect compromise for that one board quiver that can do it all. You just need to find the right volume according to your weight and the wind conditions at your spot. If you hesitate between two sizes, I would recommend taking a slightly smaller volume, thanks to the shape of the bottom and the volume balance, which gives the board glide and comfort in all conditions.
Something not to forget too, is that the board is super light, which makes carrying it around and getting in and out of the water so much easier, and on the water, it’s quick and responsive, which made transitions feel smooth, and you definitely feel a direct feeling with your foil. Overall, this really is a killer board for wingfoiling – light, fast, and fun to ride.
